This year Tana’s corporate social responsibility project was to support Crisis Management Initiative ry (CMI). CMI is an independent Finnish non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and resolve conflict through informal dialogue and mediation.
Today, peace work is as crucial as ever. For 20 years after the end of Cold War, the world enjoyed a time of declining global conflicts. However, since 2010 and each year since the world has seen more conflict, more victims, and more people displaced, and unfortunately 2017 was no different. Fortunately a growing number of individuals, states, organizations and corporations want to do something as the conflicts keep soaring. That is why we are partnering with one of the world’s top peace negotiating NGOs.
CMI was founded in 2000 by a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, who has always been passionate about addressing the root causes of conflicts. Since the foundation of CMI, the organisation has become one of the leaders in its field.
CMI’s staff of around 70 people work with ongoing commitments in the world’s most challenging areas, Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Eurasia. In 2016, CMI had 16 projects in 13 countries, 987 meetings with conflict stakeholders, 175 workshops and dialogue meetings.
In its work, CMI underlines the importance of involving all relevant actors in the pursuit of sustainable peace. Their work rests on the principles of impartiality, local ownership, inclusiveness, coordination, and complementarity. One of CMI’s most visible assignments has been the Aceh peace process that put on end to almost three decades of conflict and gave the province of Aceh autonomous statuts within Indonesia. CMI’s founder Mr. Ahtisaari has also had a leading role in bringing independence to Namibia and Serbia’s withdrawal from Kosovo. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
